Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2022, and his health has since declined. He now lives full-time with caregivers. His wife, Emma Heming Willis, has been open about the family’s journey and recently shared a heartfelt reflection on navigating Christmas amid his illness.
In a blog post, Emma wrote that the holidays “look different” now, requiring careful planning and bringing mixed emotions of grief and love. She noted that while dementia changes traditions, it doesn’t erase meaning, warmth, or joy.
Emma spoke openly about grief, saying it comes not only with death but with change and the loss of familiar routines. She reflected on Bruce’s love for Christmas, remembering him as the family’s pancake-maker and steady presence. “Dementia doesn’t erase those memories,” she wrote, “but it does create space between then and now.”
In September, Bruce moved into a nearby home with full-time caregivers—a painful but necessary decision. This Christmas, Emma shared, the family will still gather and open gifts, but instead of Bruce making the pancakes, she will, encouraging others to embrace change and create new memories.
