Society often pressures people to follow a set path—marriage, children, and family—while judging those who don’t fit the mold. These judgments can be especially harsh when someone perceived as “different” chooses to become a parent.
More than 20 years ago, Patti White faced both joy and concern when her daughter Lisa announced she was pregnant. Lisa has Down syndrome, yet lived independently, worked full time, and maintained a healthy adult relationship. Despite common beliefs that men with Down syndrome are infertile, Lisa became pregnant—and her family stood firmly by her decision to keep the child.
Outsiders criticized Lisa, questioning her ability to be a mother. Still, she embraced pregnancy fully, attending classes and continuing to work, though her pregnancy was considered high risk. Her son Nic was born early and also has Down syndrome.
Though Nic’s father later passed away, Lisa and Patti raised him together. Today, Nic is a college graduate who credits his success to the love and support of his mother and grandmother.
“I have two moms,” Nic once said, calling Lisa his greatest inspiration.
In 2016, Patti shared a proud update, celebrating how mother and son had overcome the odds and built a life filled with love—proving that compassion and support matter far more than public opinion.
