Isiah Whitlock Jr., the veteran character actor best known for his roles in The Wire and Veep, has died at age 71, his manager confirmed. He passed away peacefully in New York City after a brief illness, though the exact cause of death was not disclosed.
His manager, Brian Liebman, called Whitlock a “brilliant actor and even better person,” sharing a heartfelt tribute on Instagram and saying he will be deeply missed.
Born in Indiana in 1954, Whitlock Jr. studied at Southwest Minnesota State University and later joined the American Conservatory Theater. He appeared in numerous TV series, including Law & Order and NYPD Blue, but was best known for portraying corrupt state senator Clay Davis on HBO’s The Wire, appearing in all five seasons. He also had a recurring role on Veep as Defense Secretary George Maddox.
Whitlock frequently collaborated with Spike Lee, appearing in films such as 25th Hour, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods. Lee paid tribute, calling him a “dear beloved brother.” Whitlock also lent his voice to Pixar’s upcoming film Hoppers, set for release in 2026.
