Born in Chicago in 1942 to a Jewish mother and Irish Catholic father, Ford grew up middle-class, far from Hollywood. He discovered acting in college by accident, struggled academically, and was even expelled shortly before graduating. In 1964, he moved to Los Angeles determined to become an actor.
