Former child actor Blake Garrett, best known for playing Plug in the 2006 family film How to Eat Fried Worms, has died at 33.
Garrett passed away on February 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His mother, Carol Garrett, confirmed the news and said the family is awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
Born Nolan Blake Garrett in Austin, Texas, he began performing at a young age, appearing in local theater productions and later touring nationally at age 10 with Barney’s Colorful World. He gained wider recognition in How to Eat Fried Worms, where he was part of a cast that won a Young Artist Award for Best Young Ensemble.
In recent years, Garrett had been living in Oklahoma and was proud of maintaining three years of sobriety. According to his mother, he recently sought medical care for severe pain and was diagnosed with shingles. She believes he may have tried to self-medicate, raising concerns that his death could have been accidental.
Friends and family say he had been working to rebuild his life and move forward positively.
He was only 33.
