Since the FBI released surveillance images in the kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, online users have focused on one detail: the suspect’s eyes.
The newly recovered footage shows a masked, armed person outside her Tucson home the morning she disappeared. Dressed in a balaclava, gloves, jacket, and backpack, the individual appears to tamper with her doorbell camera. FBI Director Kash Patel said the video was recovered from residual backend data after recording devices had been removed.
Nancy has been missing for over 10 days. Two $6 million bitcoin ransom deadlines have passed, though no explicit threat was included in the note.
Authorities have not identified a suspect, but social media users began analyzing the visible eye area, with some suggesting the arched brows and eye shape look feminine. Others argue the person’s gait appears masculine, and some speculate about facial hair. Law enforcement has not confirmed the suspect’s gender.
The images mark the biggest development since Nancy vanished on Feb. 1 after being dropped home by her son-in-law. The footage has triggered a surge of tips.
Former FBI agent Mark Harrigan noted the suspect’s unusual, exposed way of carrying a firearm suggests inexperience, as criminals typically conceal weapons.
Police also briefly detained and questioned a man who said he may have delivered a package to Nancy’s home, but he was later released without charges.
