A 12-year-old girl remains in critical condition after the deadly mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada, on February 10. The attack — the fourth deadliest in the country’s history — left nine people dead and 27 injured.
Maya, a student at the school, was airlifted to Vancouver Children’s Hospital with life-threatening gunshot wounds to the head and neck. Her mother, Cia Edmonds, shared on Facebook that her daughter remains in critical care and is “fighting for her life.”
Despite the severity of her injuries, Maya survived emergency brain surgery to address bleeding, though doctors are still monitoring her condition and assessing the damage.
Authorities have identified 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar as the suspect. Reports state he allegedly killed his mother and stepbrother before going to the school, where he later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $255,000 to support Maya’s recovery, as the community continues to mourn the tragedy.
