A mother allegedly fatally shot her young daughter at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas before taking her own life, authorities are investigating it as a murder-suicide. The bodies were found Sunday after the pair missed a scheduled cheerleading competition. Officers initially performed a welfare check around 10:45 a.m. but left when there was no response, returning hours later following family concerns.
The mother and daughter had traveled for the event. Utah Xtreme Cheer confirmed that pre-teen Addi Smith from Salt Lake City and her mother, Tawnia McGeehan, were missing and later announced Addi had died.
Police said the mother, in her 30s, shot Addi late Saturday. A note was found in the hotel room, but its contents were not disclosed. Investigators continue to probe the circumstances.
