Dick Vitale is facing another cancer battle after a biopsy revealed melanoma in his lung and liver cavity. The 86-year-old will begin immunotherapy treatment.
This marks his fifth fight with cancer, following previous battles with melanoma, lymphoma, vocal-cord cancer, and lymph-node cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Vitale remains optimistic, saying he’s “4 for 4” and confident he’ll win again.
After nearly two years off air, he returned emotionally before March Madness 2025. He shared that recent tests confirmed the diagnosis but says he feels strong and determined to “win the battle.”
Beyond his health struggles, Vitale continues his mission to raise money for pediatric cancer research. His annual charity gala has raised over $105 million, and he hopes to add more this year.
A legendary voice in college basketball since joining ESPN in 1979, Vitale remains one of the sport’s most iconic figures — known for his passion, energy, and resilience.
