In 2015, mother Heidi Johnson struggled with her 13-year-old son Aaron, who began acting “independent” after earning a small amount of money online and refusing to do his homework.
When he told her he was a “free person,” she responded with a tough-love lesson: a “roommate contract” where he would have to pay rent, utilities, cook his own food, and contribute to household costs if he wanted to live like an adult.
She left the note on his door, signed “Love, Mom.” Aaron initially reacted angrily, but after thinking it over, he realized he couldn’t actually afford any of it and began asking how to regain his privileges.
Heidi later explained the goal wasn’t punishment, but to teach him that nothing in life is free and that real-world responsibilities come with costs.
The post went viral, with many praising her for giving her son a realistic lesson about adulthood and accountability.
