An Arizona sheriff investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie says the case was likely a “targeted” attack and warns the suspect could strike again.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators believe they understand the motive but cannot be certain, refusing to share details as the search enters its sixth week with no major leads.
He urged the public to remain cautious, saying no one should assume they are safe.
“We believe we know why it happened, but we’re not 100% sure,” Nanos said, adding it would be dangerous to dismiss the risk.
The investigation has drawn criticism for unclear public statements and security lapses around Guthrie’s Tucson home, where reporters were reportedly able to approach the property.
Despite door-to-door searches and ongoing efforts, no suspect has been identified. Meanwhile, Guthrie’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, has returned briefly to the “Today” show, saying she plans to resume work full-time later.
