The real purpose of those mysterious lines on towels!

Posted on April 25, 2026 By admin

A viral social media post recently raised a simple question: what is the raised line on many bath towels for?

While jokingly called a “racing stripe,” it’s actually a dobby border, and it serves a practical purpose.

This woven band helps reinforce the towel’s edges, preventing fraying and increasing durability through repeated washing. It also keeps the towel from becoming too bulky at the ends, helping it stay flatter, fold more neatly, and maintain a consistent shape.

In some cases, it can even improve absorbency and provides space for subtle design details or branding without affecting softness.

So that small stitched line isn’t just decoration—it’s a functional feature that makes towels stronger, longer-lasting, and more practical.
