Every time we go grocery shopping, Jason’s phone rings right as we hit checkout. “Oh, babe, I gotta take this!” he says, disappearing and leaving me to pay. But not this time. I had a plan.
Jason is hardworking, funny, and remembers our anniversary, but he has this one habit that drives me insane. Every time we shop, he gets a “work call” at checkout. At first, I didn’t mind, but after the tenth time, I noticed the pattern.
One Saturday, as expected, his phone rang just as we approached the checkout. “Oh, babe, I gotta take this,” he said, walking away. I started unloading our groceries, feeling frustrated, especially when I saw the $347 total.
That night, I came up with a plan. I changed my contact name in Jason’s phone to “Bank Fraud Department” and waited for the next shopping trip. The next day, as we approached the checkout, I activated the trap. Jason pulled out his phone, saw the “Bank Fraud Department” call, and his face turned pale.
I answered the call, and a pre-recorded message blasted: “We’ve detected suspicious behavior on your account… specifically, pretending to take calls at checkout.” The store erupted in laughter, and Jason, red-faced, finally paid for the groceries.
Later, in the car, he admitted it was a jerk move. Since then, no more disappearing acts at checkout. Now, he insists on paying and even leaves his phone on the counter. I keep my smartwatch ready, though—just in case.
