Scottish actress Claire Nielson, best known for her role in the classic Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 89 on April 29.
Born Claire Elizabeth Isbister in Glasgow in 1937, she trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Dramatic Art before building a successful career in television and comedy. She appeared in shows like The Two Ronnies, The Dick Emery Show, and the film Kidnapped alongside Michael Caine.
Nielson became especially memorable for playing Mrs. Hamilton in the famous “Waldorf Salad” episode of Fawlty Towers with John Cleese.
Outside acting, she was also a writer, painter, and illustrator. She later studied English literature at King’s College, Cambridge and wrote children’s and family books.
Claire Nielson is survived by her husband, actor Paul Greenwood, and her daughter Peggy.
