A German Shepherd abandoned outside a Walmart with a box of toys and food spent three days alone before being taken to a shelter. Though described as calm and friendly, the frightened dog was labeled “rescue only” and placed at risk of euthanasia because of his fearful behavior in the shelter.
Pet photographer Leanna Ayala shared the dog’s story online, explaining that shelter environments can make dogs appear scared and withdrawn even if they are gentle by nature. She urged people to give him a second chance.
Thankfully, the dog—now named Maverick—was rescued just before his final shelter day and is now living with a foster-to-adopt family in Washington. Ayala later thanked supporters for helping save his life, calling his journey from abandonment to a new home an emotional rollercoaster.
