Growing up, I never understood how two siblings from the same family could be so different. Our mom raised us alone, working two jobs to support us. I remember the cold apartment, the nights without enough food, and how Mrs. Jenkins brought us dinner. Mom never ate with us—she gave everything to us, and as we got older, things slowly improved. Mom saved enough for a better life, and Samira and I went to college, but Samira didn’t remember the struggles like I did.
After college, Samira didn’t want to work and kept asking Mom for money. Then, Mom called me one day with bad news: she had a year to live at best. I promised her I’d be there, but Mom asked me not to tell Samira.
A month later, Samira found out and came to me, accusing me of trying to take Mom’s inheritance. She moved in with Mom to “take care of her,” but I knew it was for her own benefit. Samira kept blocking my visits with excuses. Eventually, I managed to see Mom, who told me Samira was helping but also spending a lot.
As Mom’s health worsened, I took charge of her care and the bills. Samira, who had been using Mom’s money, couldn’t stop me from visiting the hospital. One day, Samira asked for money for herself, but I refused. A few days later, Mom passed away, and Samira showed up with a lawyer, claiming the inheritance because she had cared for Mom.
But Mom had left everything to me. A final letter from Mom explained that she had recognized my genuine care and kindness, and I would honor her memory by living with the same love and strength she had.
