Life is unpredictable. On August 1, 31-year-old Raymond Surber crashed his truck into ACSO Reserve Deputies Lucas and Nicole Shoffner, who were fixing a dirt bike on the side of the road. In a split second, Lucas pushed his wife to safety, saving her life, but sustaining severe injuries himself.
The crash occurred around 11:17 p.m., leaving both injured, with Lucas in critical condition. He was rushed to UT Medical Center, placed in a coma, and later transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta. Nicole, with minor injuries, supported her husband’s recovery throughout.
A GoFundMe raised over $93,000 for their medical expenses. After 23 days, Lucas woke up and began his recovery, walking 200 steps at rehab, which was a major milestone.
Lucas’ selfless act of love saved his wife, even at the cost of his own life-threatening injuries.
