A smiling little girl grew up to become a neonatal nurse trusted by parents to care for their fragile newborn babies. To everyone around her, she seemed kind, dedicated, and passionate about helping children.
After graduating from the University of Chester in 2011, Lucy Letby began working at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Colleagues saw her as caring and professional, and no one suspected anything was wrong.
But between 2015 and 2016, doctors noticed an alarming rise in unexplained baby deaths and sudden collapses in the neonatal unit. Lead doctors discovered one disturbing pattern — Lucy Letby had been present during every incident. Concerns were raised in 2016, but police were not contacted until 2017.
Investigators later accused Letby of injecting air into babies’ bloodstreams, poisoning some with insulin, and overfeeding others with milk. Seven babies died, and several more were seriously harmed. A note found in her home reportedly read: “I am evil, I did this.”
Her trial began in 2022 and became one of the longest and most shocking cases in British legal history. In August 2023, she was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others. She received a whole-life prison sentence and will never be released.
However, the case continues to spark debate. Some international medical experts later questioned the evidence, suggesting several deaths may have been caused by natural complications or poor medical care instead of murder. Despite ongoing controversy, UK courts have upheld her conviction.
