Five Italian divers who disappeared inside underwater caves in the Maldives were feared dead after a tragic scuba diving accident in Vaavu Atoll. During recovery efforts, Maldivian Coast Guard diver Sergeant Major Mohammed Mahdi also died after reportedly suffering decompression sickness underwater.
The Italian divers vanished after entering caves nearly 200 feet deep, triggering a major rescue mission. Experts believe possible causes include oxygen tank problems, oxygen toxicity, or panic underwater.
Among the missing were marine biology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, researcher Muriel Oddenino, marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, whose body was later found beside an empty oxygen tank.
Mahdi was honored by the Maldivian military for his courage and sacrifice during the dangerous recovery operation. Investigators continue searching the cave system while families hope to learn what happened beneath the water.
