All five Italian scuba divers who died last week in the Maldives have now been recovered after a tragic accident inside the infamous “shark cave” in the Vaavu Atoll. Investigators believe the group may have descended too deep and become lost while exploring underwater caves about 50 meters below the surface. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of death. Experts explain that during drowning, the body quickly suffers from oxygen deprivation, with unconsciousness often occurring within minutes and brain damage beginning after 4–6 minutes without oxygen. In water, decomposition happens differently than on land due to low oxygen, water conditions, and marine activity, sometimes causing body fat to turn into a wax-like substance called adipocere.
