The fiancé of one of the five Italians killed in the Maldives diving tragedy has shared the heartbreaking final message from his girlfriend, 22-year-old Giorgia Sommacal. Giorgia died alongside her mother, marine biologist Monica Montefalcone, and three other Italian divers after the group reportedly became trapped inside a deep underwater cave near Vaavu Atoll on May 14.
Her fiancé, Federico Colombo, said Giorgia was excited before the dive and told him she would send photos from the Maldives as soon as she surfaced.
“I waited for those photos, but they never arrived,” he said.
Federico described Giorgia as his future wife and said he still struggles to accept the tragedy. He also shared that Giorgia and her mother had a special bond, and the family had planned future trips together once she finished university. Giorgia was supposed to return home to Italy on Federico’s birthday, May 24.
