Lindsay Dewey, a mother of three from Idaho, never planned to share her heartbreaking story. After losing her 22-month-old son, Reed, in a tragic household accident, she now feels compelled to warn other parents.
On a typical day, Reed was playing with a suction cup bowl on a large mirror, trying to pull it off. In an instant, the mirror fell and struck him. Though Reed didn’t die immediately, he suffered a fractured skull and traumatic brain injury. Despite quick medical attention, he didn’t survive.
The mirror, heavy and not meant to be anchored, had always seemed safe. However, a recent move of a nearby chair led to the tragedy. Lindsay, devastated, shared the story to prevent others from experiencing similar loss.
Though facing potential criticism, Lindsay hopes her experience can save lives. “If sharing this can save one child’s life, it’s worth it,” she said, urging parents to be cautious with household items.
Since the accident, Lindsay’s story has gained widespread attention, and she has over 95,000 followers on social media. Yet, she rejects the title of “parenting influencer,” emphasizing that she’s just an average mom.
Accidents like Reed’s are not rare. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 2017-2019, thousands of children were injured by tipped furniture, appliances, and TVs. The “Anchor It!” campaign aims to raise awareness about these dangers.
Lindsay’s story serves as a stark reminder for parents to always stay vigilant, as tragedy can strike in the blink of an eye.
