For 15 years, our stepmother convinced us our mother abandoned us — until one Mother’s Day, I arrived alone and overheard her laughing on the phone: “Those two idiots never suspected a thing.”
Her next words destroyed everything we believed.
When we were seven, our mom kissed me and my twin sister Lucy goodbye before school and promised to pick us up later. She never came back. Dad told us she was gone, and months later Amber entered our lives, soon becoming our stepmother.
At first she seemed kind, but over the years she became cold and controlling, constantly reminding us that our “real mom” left us. We grew up believing we weren’t worth staying for.
On Mother’s Day, while bringing Amber flowers, I overheard her confessing the truth on the phone. She admitted she manipulated our mother into leaving by convincing her Dad wanted to take custody and lock her in a mental hospital. She also admitted she hid every letter Mom sent us for 15 years.
Shaking, I searched Amber’s locked storage closet and found boxes filled with unopened letters addressed to Lucy and me — including one sent just days earlier.
When Dad arrived, I showed him the letters and revealed everything I heard. Amber tried to deny it, but Dad realized only she knew private details about Mom’s past struggles. Finally, the truth hit him.
He threw Amber out immediately.
That same day, Dad, Lucy, and I drove to the return address on the newest letter. When the door opened, our mother stood there crying, unable to believe it was really us.
For the first time in 15 years, we finally came home to the mother who never stopped loving us.
