Brian Connolly, the charismatic frontman of the glam rock band Brian Connolly, rose to worldwide fame in the 1970s with hits like Ballroom Blitz. As the face of The Sweet, he helped the band sell over 50 million records and become one of the biggest rock acts of the era.
Born in Scotland in 1945, Connolly had a difficult childhood after being abandoned as a baby and raised by foster parents. Despite his success, fame and alcohol addiction slowly destroyed his career and health. After leaving The Sweet in 1979 for a solo career, his music failed to match the band’s success, and financial troubles forced him to sell his house after massive tax debts.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Connolly suffered multiple heart attacks, partial paralysis, and worsening health caused by years of alcohol abuse. Though he continued touring with his own version of Sweet, he struggled physically and financially while legal battles over the band’s name added more pressure.
By the mid-1990s, the once-glamorous rock star was barely recognizable, walking with a limp and visibly shaking during performances. His final concert took place in December 1996, and just three months later, Brian Connolly died in 1997 from kidney and liver failure combined with multiple heart attacks.
Though his life ended tragically, fans still remember him as the unforgettable voice and face behind some of the greatest glam rock hits of the 1970s.
