Debate around Planet Fitness has intensified after a viral video from an Alaska location sparked controversy online. A woman posted a photo of a transgender woman in the women’s locker room, criticizing the gym’s policy and claiming the space should only be for cisgender women.
The photo showed the transgender woman shaving at a sink, and the woman who shared it later posted a video expressing her anger, which quickly went viral and fueled a nationwide debate.
Afterward, Planet Fitness revoked the member’s membership for violating policy, while stating that people may use locker rooms that match their gender identity. The company also warned that acting in bad faith could lead to membership cancellation.
As the controversy spread online, some conservative voices called for boycotts of Planet Fitness. Reports claim the company’s stock dropped from around $66 to $56 within days, while its market value reportedly fell by hundreds of millions of dollars!
