While celebrating their 40th anniversary in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Marius and Michelle Nortje spotted three giraffes during a routine drive. One giraffe stood out, covered in unusual growths that shocked even Marius, an experienced wildlife photographer.

After sharing photos online, many people worried the animal was suffering. Experts later explained that the giraffe likely has a condition caused by Bovine Papillomavirus (BPV), a virus believed to spread through oxpecker birds. Although the growths appear painful and may cause discomfort, the disease is not life-threatening and often heals on its own.

Despite her condition, the giraffe was calmly grazing, showing no obvious signs of distress. The images sparked widespread sympathy and curiosity, highlighting both the resilience and vulnerability of wildlife.

For the Nortjes, the encounter became an unforgettable reminder that nature’s most remarkable moments often happen when you least expect them.
