Eighteen-year-old Kieran Matthew avoided prison after violently attacking his teacher, Carol Shaw, at St Paul’s Academy in Dundee. During the incident, he grabbed her in a “rugby-style grip” and slammed her head onto a concrete floor, leaving her unconscious with a severe head injury that required 10 stitches. Doctors said the injuries could have been fatal.
The attack left Ms. Shaw permanently scarred and unable to return to teaching. She continues to suffer from panic attacks, nightmares, and psychological trauma.
Despite pleading guilty to assault causing permanent disfigurement and endangerment to life, Matthew received a three-year social work supervision order instead of jail. He must attend anger management sessions and follow a nighttime curfew.
The court heard that Matthew had a history of severe childhood abuse, PTSD, ADHD, and significant learning difficulties, which were considered mitigating factors. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith told him that he had robbed Ms. Shaw of her career and permanently changed her life.
