Rhys Russell was just 18 when he died from an aggressive form of melanoma, a cancer that showed almost no warning signs. It began as a small red patch on his scalp that seemed harmless but was later diagnosed as melanoma in late 2021.
Within months, the cancer had advanced to stage four and spread to his liver, lungs, brain, and other organs. Despite intensive treatment, Rhys endured severe pain as the disease progressed rapidly.
His father, Oli, says Rhys’ story highlights a common misconception that melanoma only affects older people or those with heavy sun exposure. He urges people to get any unusual changes checked, no matter how minor they seem.
Despite his illness, Rhys remained strong and found comfort in a special Zoom call with his soccer hero, Jack Grealish, who sent him a signed shirt and personal message.
Now, Rhys’ parents are sharing his story to raise awareness about melanoma and the importance of early detection. They are also honoring his final wish by raising funds to have his ashes scattered at Etihad Stadium’s memorial garden.
His heartbreaking story is a reminder that melanoma can affect anyone and that early action can save lives.
