Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that mainly affects older adults, causing widespread muscle pain and stiffness. Often misdiagnosed as arthritis or other conditions, PMR can go undetected for months, delaying treatment and worsening symptoms.
Early signs matter—recognizing them can prevent unnecessary suffering and mobility issues.
Key Symptoms of PMR:
-
Shoulder Pain
Often the first sign, typically in both shoulders, worse at night. Common issues:-
Difficulty lifting arms
-
Persistent ache in upper arms
-
Pain spreading to back or chest
-
-
Pain in Other Areas
Aches also appear in hips, thighs, neck, upper arms, and buttocks. This makes walking, climbing stairs, and sitting uncomfortable. The pain isn’t relieved by rest and can worsen with inactivity. -
Morning Stiffness
A hallmark of PMR:-
Lasts over an hour
-
Muscles feel “locked”
-
Improves with movement but returns after rest
-
-
Limited Mobility
Stiffness and pain can reduce range of motion in shoulders and hips, leading to further mobility decline. -
Smaller Joint Pain
Some experience discomfort in knees, wrists, and elbows—though unlike arthritis, PMR doesn’t cause joint damage. -
Other Symptoms
Fatigue, low energy, low-grade fever, weight loss, malaise, and depression may also occur due to chronic pain.
Why Early Diagnosis Matters
PMR responds well to low-dose corticosteroids, often bringing rapid relief. Left untreated, it can severely limit mobility and independence.
Bottom line: If you notice unexplained muscle pain, stiffness, or sudden mobility issues, don’t wait—talk to your doctor.
