It’s a warning that can’t be repeated enough: don’t use your phone while driving.
Many of us have been guilty of it, myself included. But after hearing 17-year-old Katelyn Ray’s story, I’ve vowed never to keep my phone within reach while driving again.
On the morning of September 5, 2018, Katelyn was driving to pick up her sister when she crashed into a school bus that had slowed down on the highway. She didn’t brake—her phone was still in her hand when first responders arrived. Katelyn died instantly.
Thankfully, none of the children on the bus were physically hurt. But Katelyn’s family was left devastated. Her mother, who had asked her to pick up her sister that morning, never got to speak to her again.
Police believe Katelyn was distracted by her phone. They later shared a post online urging others to pay attention while driving.
Katelyn’s story is a heartbreaking reminder: a single glance at your phone can cost a life. Let’s honor her memory by making safer choices behind the wheel.
