Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup has been marked by controversy both on and off the pitch.
After uncertainty over U.S. visas, the team was finally cleared to enter, though several staff members were denied access. Iran will be based in Mexico for the tournament and play matches in U.S. cities.
Upon arrival, players drew attention by wearing “#168” badges on their jackets.
The Iranian federation says the symbol honors 168 children allegedly killed during the early stages of the Iran–US conflict in 2026.
The gesture has sparked global debate, especially as FIFA rules ban political messaging on equipment, though officials have not yet commented.
The team’s use of the badge, and when it was added during travel, has further fueled discussion ahead of the tournament.
