Virginia 10-year-old takes her own life after standing up to bullies

Just a month ago, 10-year-old Autumn Bushman was a fearless, loving, and energetic child. But on March 21, her family’s world shattered when she died by suicide at their home in Roanoke, Virginia — a heartbreaking outcome her parents say stemmed from relentless bullying.

According to her parents, Autumn became a target after standing up for classmates at Mountain View Elementary School. The bullying, which began at the start of fourth grade, escalated over time despite being reported to the school.

In the weeks before her death, Autumn began showing subtle signs of distress — wearing darker clothes, withdrawing from activities, and asking to stay home from school. Her mother, Summer, recalled Autumn once came to her in tears, saying, “I’m really stressed out. I’m being bullied.”

Her parents now question whether enough was done by the school to address the situation. “We entrust schools with our kids — but are they really keeping close tabs?” her father, Mark, said.

Following Autumn’s death, the school district announced a full review but cited privacy laws for not sharing details.

Her funeral was open to the community, and her parents are now advocating for early conversations about mental health and bullying. “Let’s give these kids a life worth living through accountability and solid resources,” Mark wrote on Facebook.

Autumn is remembered as a bright, kind soul who loved dance, cheer, archery, and the color baby blue. Her family hopes her legacy inspires lasting change — and a united stand against bullying.
