South African figure skater Kira Meyer has died at the age of 12 following an electric scooter accident.
Her condition was first shared publicly by her mother, Angelique Meyer, who revealed she had been airlifted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg with a severe brain injury and placed in an ICU coma. In the days that followed, Angelique provided updates on Facebook, saying Kira remained unresponsive but still had stable vital signs.
On May 16, doctors declared Kira brain dead, and later reports confirmed her passing after her lungs failed while she remained on life support. Her mother described the devastating moment while continuing to ask for prayers and support from the public throughout the ordeal.
A memorial service was later announced for May 22.
The South African Figure Skating Association paid tribute to Kira, calling her a cherished member of the skating community whose presence would be deeply missed both on and off the ice.
