Francesca Valentino, the only person killed in the massive fire at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Resort in the Dominican Republic, was a devoted mother of two who was visiting family and friends when tragedy struck.
The 45-year-old reportedly died from smoke inhalation after a fast-moving fire swept through the beachfront resort, forcing around 1,700 guests and staff to evacuate. Several others were treated for injuries.
Originally from Caserta, Italy, Valentino had lived in the Dominican Republic, where she met and married her husband in 2016. The couple later returned to Italy after welcoming two daughters.
A former dancer and fashion designer, Valentino later managed a bed-and-breakfast in her hometown. Authorities said she was the only fatality, while investigators continue to examine the cause of the blaze, which officials say spread quickly due to palm roofing materials and strong winds.
