Avery Koonce: The sad story behind her illness and death

Posted on April 17, 2025 By admin

Avery Koonce was a standout athlete at Thrall High School in Texas, setting records in the 100m and 200m dashes. Her love for running led her to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she joined the women’s track team.

Tragically, at just 19, Avery passed away on September 4, 2024, in her dorm room in Colorado Springs. Despite emergency efforts, she was declared dead at the scene with no visible signs of trauma. An autopsy later revealed she died from Paeniclostridium sordellii sepsis—a rare, deadly bacterial infection—complicating a viral respiratory illness.

Fellow cadets had found her unresponsive after days of severe coughing. Experts believe early antibiotic treatment might have saved her life.

Avery’s death shocked her family, friends, and the Air Force Academy community. She had recently graduated high school, excelling in academics, cheerleading, powerlifting, band, and cross country. She dreamed of becoming a physical therapist for pilots.

On September 12, over 100 cadets joined her memorial service in Thrall, Texas. “We lost an incredible teammate,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, reflecting on her impact.

Her family described her as “a bright light in this broken world,” saying they are heartbroken but grateful for the 19 years they had with her.

Avery will be remembered for her spirit, ambition, and the love she gave so freely.
