I Worked a Double Shift in the ER on Christmas

Posted on June 24, 2026 By admin

The next morning, I sat at the kitchen table and wrote a letter with my husband, Mark, explaining exactly how my parents had hurt our daughter on Christmas Eve. We described how Abby was turned away from their home, made to feel unwelcome, and left to spend Christmas alone on toast and a banana.

The letter made one thing clear: they had chosen exclusion over family, and we would no longer accept that. After signing it together, we drove to their house and left the envelope on their door.

Walking away, I felt both grief and relief—grief for the relationship we were losing, and relief in finally protecting our daughter.

Back home, Abby was in the kitchen making pancakes with Mark. For the first time in a long time, the house felt warm again.
