Taking care of Mom was hard enough without the tension with my sister, Jane. When precious things started disappearing, I suspected her, but the truth shattered me. Betrayal came from where I least expected.
I spent long hours at Mom’s house, growing increasingly frustrated with Jane’s neglect. She’d only visit when she needed something, leaving me to care for Mom and deal with her illness alone. I hired a caregiver, but I was still doing most of the work after my shifts.
One day, Mom called me in a panic—her gold earrings were missing. Jane had visited earlier, but Mom insisted she hadn’t taken them. Still, I confronted Jane, who denied it and got defensive. A few weeks later, more items disappeared, always after Jane’s visits, and I became convinced she was the thief.
I decided to install security cameras. When I checked the footage, I was horrified to see Kaden—my husband—stealing from Mom, not Jane. He’d been gambling and stealing to cover his debts, even letting me blame Jane for his actions.
When I confronted Kaden, he confessed, and I told him to leave. Later, I apologized to Jane, who had quietly been supporting me through everything, and we reconciled.
