The story of little Zaelynn, who died after parents left her in 109-degree closet

Posted on April 24, 2025 By admin

If you’re unable or unwilling to care for a child, ask a trusted relative for help. If that’s not an option, take the child to a hospital, fire station, or contact child protective services. Every child deserves love and safety.

Tragically, little Zaelynn never got that chance.

Her story, from Berne, Indiana, shocked even veteran officers. In November 2024, police found 2-year-old Zaelynn dead after being left to sleep in a closet with a space heater running. The temperature soared to 109.4°F — she died of hyperthermia.

Her parents, Sintia Perez and Jace Hirschy, lived in squalid conditions with their three kids. The closet where Zaelynn slept was filthy, and her body showed heartbreaking signs of neglect. They didn’t check on her until it was far too late.

The other children, aged 3 and 5, were removed from the home, which was infested with roaches and mold. Both parents face serious felony charges and await trial in March 2025.

Zaelynn was remembered as a joyful, bright child who lit up every room. Her loss is devastating.
