Cause of Death Revealed: Beloved TV Star Dies at 56

I Stopped to Help an Elderly Couple With a Flat Tire — A Week Later, My Mom Told Me to Turn on the TV

I was driving through the first snowstorm of the season with my seven-year-old daughter, Emma, when I noticed an elderly couple stranded on the highway with a blown-out tire.

I pulled over immediately.

The couple, William and Margaret, had been waiting nearly an hour for roadside assistance. Their hands were shaking from the cold, and they were desperate to reach their grandchildren for Thanksgiving.

I changed the tire myself, refusing any payment.

Before we left, Emma drew them a picture and handed it through the car window.

“Because you were sad, and now you’re not sad,” she explained.

We drove away and forgot about the whole thing.

Until a week later, my mother called me screaming.

“STUART! Turn on the TV! RIGHT NOW!”

I turned on the news and froze.

There were William and Margaret on television.

The headline read:

“LOCAL GOOD SAMARITAN SAVES FORMER SENATOR AND WIFE.”

The elderly couple I had helped were actually a former U.S. senator and his wife.

They told the reporter how dozens of cars had passed them, but one father had stopped without knowing who they were.

Then they showed Emma’s drawing.

William announced that they were offering $25,000 to the stranger who had helped them—and were creating an annual award honoring ordinary people who perform extraordinary acts of kindness.

But that wasn’t all.

They invited Emma and me to Washington, D.C., to help light the National Christmas Tree.

When we met them, William told me something I’ll never forget:

“The money is nice, but what you gave us that day was faith that kindness still exists.”

Four weeks later, Emma stood beside me in Washington, wearing her princess dress, as we helped light the Christmas Tree.

The $25,000 went toward her college fund and repairs to our home.

But the real reward wasn’t the money.

It was watching my daughter learn that helping someone should never depend on who they are—or what they can give you in return.

Years later, Emma would tell people:

“We would’ve stopped anyway. That’s just what good people do.”

And she was right.
