Georgia Congressman David Scott Dies at 80

Longtime Georgia lawmaker and businessman David Scott has died at age 80, according to WABE. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

Scott served more than two decades in Congress and was a strong advocate for farmers, education, healthcare and veterans. A Democrat, he was serving his 12th term and was seeking reelection for a 13th.

Born in South Carolina in 1945, Scott later moved to Georgia, where he built a successful business before entering politics.

In 2002, he was elected to the U.S. House representing Georgia’s 13th District. He later became the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.

Throughout his career, Scott was known for supporting Georgia farmers, HBCUs, children’s healthcare and veterans.

He leaves behind a decades-long legacy of public service in Georgia.
