My MIL arrived at our housewarming party with two huge suitcases and announced:
“I’LL BE LIVING HERE NOW — AND I’LL BE TAKING THE LITTLE GIRL’S ROOM.”
Everyone froze.
Then she looked at my 5-year-old daughter, Meredith, and said:
“YOUR DAUGHTER FROM YOUR FIRST MARRIAGE IS NOT WELCOME HERE.”
My daughter burst into tears and clung to me.
Then my mother, Helen, calmly put down her spoon and stood up.
She looked my MIL straight in the eyes and said:
“Deborah, I wasn’t aware you had purchased this apartment.”
My MIL froze.
Then Mom revealed the truth: the apartment legally belonged to me.
My MIL demanded that Todd take her side.
He finally stood up and said:
“Mom, you’re not staying here. And you will NEVER speak about Meredith like that again.”
Then he said the words that changed everything:
“I’m choosing my family.”
Deborah left with her suitcases.
And one week later, we discovered why she had really wanted to move in…
She had already sold her own house, assuming we would support her.
