Gabriella’s graduation should have been one of the happiest nights of my life. Instead, it became the night a secret from eighteen years ago came back.
I had raised Gabriella alone after her biological father, Kalen, disappeared when I became pregnant at seventeen. His father, Richard, had been ashamed of the pregnancy and even offered me money to end it.
I never went to college. I worked constantly to give Gabriella a better life. Eventually, I married Devon and built a happy family.
But on graduation night, Kalen appeared at our door.
“This is your biological father,” I told Gabriella.
Kalen immediately demanded that I tell her the truth—or he would.
He claimed his father had sent him away to Switzerland and hidden the letters I had written him. He said he had only recently discovered them.
But then I revealed the document Richard had given me years earlier: Kalen had signed away his parental rights.
Gabriella was devastated.
Then she discovered something worse.
Kalen wasn’t there simply to reconnect with her. His father had left a trust for biological grandchildren, and Kalen wanted Gabriella to sign documents before she turned nineteen.
My daughter looked at him and said, “I’m not a signature.”
She told him that Devon was the father who raised her, while I was the mother who sacrificed everything for her.
Kalen left without getting what he wanted.
