Olena Zelenska: From Writer to First Lady
Olena Zelenska, once a writer, now serves as Ukraine’s First Lady alongside her husband, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Their journey from personal partnership to political prominence began in Kryvyi Rih, where they met as students. After years of dating, they married in 2003 and built a life grounded in mutual respect.
Volodymyr’s rise from comedian to president was unexpected, with Olena contributing as a scriptwriter for his hit show Servant of the People. As he transitioned to politics, she evolved into a public figure advocating for education, children’s health, and social reforms.
Olena has prioritized improving school nutrition, drawing on global models to benefit Ukraine’s youth. Her work became even more vital during the war, as she supported her husband and the nation while raising awareness about the abduction of over 19,000 Ukrainian children by Russian forces. Only a fraction have been returned, despite international efforts.
Though the war separated Olena and Volodymyr for long periods, their shared mission and resilience have deepened their bond. While Volodymyr leads Ukraine on the world stage, Olena plays a crucial role in shaping its future behind the scenes.
