After her stroke, Susan Boyle returns with song that made her a star

Posted on May 1, 2025 By admin

Susan Boyle turned an evening into pure magic when she stepped onto the stage of Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) and surprised fans by performing the song that made her a global sensation in 2009.

In 2009, the world paused for a moment. A shy, middle-aged woman with a mischievous smile and an unassuming presence walked onto the stage of Britain’s Got Talent.

Susan Boyle’s story wasn’t one anyone expected, but after her spine-tingling delivery of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Misérables, she blew up the internet and became a global sensation.

“I didn’t expect this kind of reaction. It was weird to begin with, but I like the attention, and I could get used to it,” said the Scottish-born chanteuse, who turns 64 on April 1. “I am taking it all in my stride.”

In a 2009 interview with the Guardian, Boyle explained she wasn’t sure how the audience would receive her after a lifetime of bullying due to her learning disability. Boyle was later confirmed to have Asperger’s Syndrome and an IQ way above average.

“I expected people to be a wee bit cynical,” she said of silencing her skeptics. “But I decided to win them round. That is what you do. They didn’t know what to expect…You just have to keep going and take one step at a time and one day you will make it. You just don’t give up.”

Surprise performance

In 2023, Boyle proved that she will not give up.

In June, she made a triumphant return during the BGT finals, surprising fans with a repeat performance of “I Dreamed a Dream,” alongside the West End cast of Les Misérables. When the first few notes of the song played, the audience already knew they were in for something special. As the West End cast began singing, anticipation filled the air.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Susan Boyle appeared onstage during the pre-chorus.

The reaction was immediate – cheers, applause, and even a few tears from the crowd. Boyle’s voice, rich and full of emotion, filled the auditorium as she effortlessly delivered the song’s powerful lyrics. As she reached the climactic belted note, the audience erupted once more, captivated by her unmatched vocal prowess.

It was a performance that transported everyone back to 2009, yet it felt even more profound – because this time, Boyle wasn’t just proving she had talent.

‘Perseverance paid off’

The singer revealed that the year before, she suffered a stroke and “fought like crazy” to get back on stage.

“It feels great. It is extra special for me, actually, because last April there, I suffered a minor stroke,” she told fans about performing again.

She continued, “I have fought like crazy to get back on stage. And I have done it.”

And Simon Cowell told her, “Susan, we owe you so much and I knew you weren’t well, but if anyone was going to come back you were going to come back because we wouldn’t be the same without you.”

“You are amazing,” Cowell added.

Later, Boyle shared a post on Facebook, expressing her deepest gratitude: “Tonight I had the privilege of returning to [BGT]and performing with the wonderful cast of [Les Misérables],” she wrote in a caption alongside photos of the appearance.

“This evening was even more special for me as in April of 2022 I had a stroke. For the past year I have worked so hard to get my speech and singing back, with the sole aim of being able to sing on stage again & tonight my hard work & perseverance paid off, singing the song that started it all, ‘I Dreamed A Dream’…”
