Single Dad Adopts Baby Girl Rejected by 20 Families Because of Her Diagnosis

Posted on September 20, 2026 By admin

I went to a county placement center to meet a baby girl named Maya after twenty families had rejected her because she had Down syndrome.

I only planned to offer financial help.

Then I held her.

Her tiny hand grabbed my jacket and wouldn’t let go.

When I opened her file, one name stopped me:

Evelyn Vance.

It was the maiden name of my estranged sister—the woman I hadn’t heard from in nine years.

I called my brother Arthur.

He confirmed the truth.

Maya was our niece.

Evelyn had died after giving birth, and no one had known she had a child.

Maya had spent fourteen months waiting for someone to choose her.

I didn’t hesitate.

I signed the emergency guardianship papers and began the adoption process.

Six months later, Maya was home.

The little girl twenty families had rejected had become the center of our lives.

And I realized something:

I thought I was rescuing Maya. In reality, she was the one bringing our broken family back together. ❤️
