For ten years, I tried to be a real father to my stepdaughters, Ava and Bella. I was there for their birthdays, games, school events, and every important moment. I gave them my time, money, and love because I believed we were a family.
Yesterday, I planned a surprise trip to Hawaii for their birthdays. Instead of appreciation, Ava rolled her eyes, while Bella said, “You’re delusional if you think you’re our dad.”
Those words changed everything.
I calmly canceled the trip and told my wife, Julia, that I could no longer keep chasing a place they never wanted to give me.
I’m not stepping back to punish them. I’m doing it because I finally need to protect my own dignity.
I still care about Ava and Bella, but I’m done trying to buy their affection or prove that I belong.
For the first time in ten years, I’m choosing myself.
