My Boyfriend’s Mother Held a Bride Competition—Then I Walked Away With His Family Heirloom
Ryan and I had been together for four years.
Every time I mentioned marriage, he said the proposal had to be “just like in the movies.”
So when he invited me to an important dinner at his mother Diane’s house, I thought this was finally the night.
Instead, I walked into a nightmare.
Three women in bridal gowns were sitting in the living room.
Diane smiled and announced:
“My son deserves the best wife. Tonight, we’ll find out who deserves him.”
The competition included ironing Ryan’s shirts, folding socks, peeling potatoes, and planning seven dinners on $30.
Ryan was the judge.
I stared at him.
“You’re really doing this?”
He shrugged.
“If you really love me, proving you’re the best shouldn’t be hard.”
That sentence ended four years for me.
I walked out.
Then I called my mother.
“What did you mean when you said you hoped Sunday would be everything I was waiting for?”
Her answer stunned me.
“Ryan came here two weeks ago. He said he wanted to propose.”
Then she told me something even bigger.
“He asked for Grandma’s ring.”
The ring had been promised to me for years.
Ryan had taken it from my family because he planned to propose that night.
I called my parents.
Thirty minutes later, they arrived at Diane’s house.
When Ryan opened the door and saw them, his face went white.
“Oh God. What have you done?”
My mother looked past him.
“Give me my mother’s ring.”
Silence.
Ryan finally pulled out the velvet box.
Grandma’s ring was inside.
Then, as if the night couldn’t get worse, Ryan dropped to one knee.
“Will you marry me?”
For years, I’d imagined saying yes.
But not after watching him judge me in front of his mother and three strangers.
“No, Ryan.”
I took the ring back.
Three days later, I slid it onto my own finger.
Mom asked, “For yourself?”
“Yes.”
It belonged to someone who loved me.
That was reason enough to wear it.
