My 81-Year-Old Dad Refused to Wear a Suit to My Daughter’s Wedding—Then Everyone Saw What He Chose Instead
Three days before Charlotte’s wedding, my 81-year-old father announced he wouldn’t wear a suit.
I thought he was joking.
On the wedding morning, he refused to come inside. Ten minutes before the ceremony, the groom rushed into the bridal suite.
“You need to see your grandfather.”
Outside, a crowd had gathered.
Then I saw him.
My father was standing by the entrance in a giant hot-dog costume.
Everyone laughed—until the groom noticed the faded logo on the costume.
An elderly woman suddenly stopped, dropped her cane, and stared at my father.
Then she screamed:
“Desmond!”
My father whispered, “Cece?”
That was when we discovered the ridiculous costume was connected to a story about my late mother, a decades-old promise, and the love story that started before I was born.
And my father hadn’t worn it to embarrass anyone.
He had worn it to keep a promise to the woman he never stopped loving.
