My 6-year-old put a “DADDY WANTED” sign in our yard — an hour later, the man at my door was the last person I expected.
“Mommy, can we get a daddy?”
That innocent question from my six-year-old daughter, Millie, caught me completely off guard. I told her we were already a great team.
A few hours later, I found a cardboard sign in our yard:
DADDY WANTED
And underneath it, she had written my real phone number.
I couldn’t stop laughing.
Until someone knocked on the door.
When I opened it, I froze.
It was Noah—the man who had disappeared six years earlier after learning I was pregnant.
He looked at me and quietly said, “I saw the sign.”
Behind me, Millie appeared.
“Mommy, is he here because of my sign?”
I didn’t know what to say.
Noah eventually admitted the truth: he had been scared, ashamed, and had spent years regretting leaving us.
But I wasn’t ready to simply forgive him.
He would have to prove that he could stay.
Slowly, he began showing up. He met Millie at the park, helped with little things around the house, and learned how to be part of her life without demanding the title of “Dad.”
Months later, Millie made another sign.
NO DADDY WANTED.
Underneath:
ONE IS STILL TRAINING.
I laughed.
Noah looked at me.
I smiled and said, “There’s room in our life if you keep showing up.”
And this time, he promised he would.
