MY HUSBAND DESTROYED MY LAPTOP AND SAID, “WOMEN AREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE SMART.” THEN MY 8-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER SILENCED HIM.
I had returned to graduate school to finish my biology dissertation, but Grant hated every minute of it.
One morning, just before my deadline, he “accidentally” dropped my laptop down the stairs.
My weekend revisions were gone.
Then he looked at me and smirked.
“Women aren’t supposed to be smart. Go make me breakfast.”
I sat on the stairs in tears.
Then Ellie came downstairs holding her school project.
“Mommy, you need to see this.”
She had made a poster titled:
“WHEN I GROW UP, I WANT TO BE LIKE MY MOM.”
Underneath, she wrote:
“DON’T LISTEN. KEEP TRYING.”
Then she walked into the kitchen.
“Daddy needs to see it too.”
Grant’s smile disappeared.
And for the first time, I realized Ellie had heard everything.
